A two-vehicle smash has caused delays for drivers heading towards a busy South Shields roundabout.

North East Live Traffic tweeted about the crash at 3.45pm, saying one lane was partially blocked by the collision on the A1300 John Reid Road, close to the roundabout with King George Road and Prince Edward Road.

It said the congestion had cleared by 4.20pm, with the vehicles recovered from the scene.

Northumbria Police confirmed it was called to the scene just before 3.10pm, with an ambulance also requested for one of the drivers involved.

A spokesperson added: “It was reported that a lorry and a blue Citroen had collided on the roundabout at the bottom end of Harton Nook.

“The road was partially blocked but has since been cleared.”

The AA also reported there was “very slow traffic” in the area due to the collision.
