Roads in County Durham - including the A1(M) - are experiencing major delays following a number of accidents and snowfall.

CCTV camera show a layer of snow on the A690 and on the A19 as emergency services deal with a number of incident across the region.

Coastal areas such as South Shields, Sunderland, Seaham and Hartlepool appear clear although in land areas such as Houghton and Hetton have seen snowfall.

Highways England is now warning drivers who need to travel to be prepared before setting out on journeys today (Friday 8 January) due to snowy conditions on the A1 in the North East.
