Motorists facing delays of up to 50 minutes after a crash on the A1 near Durham

Motorists on the A1 are facing delays and long queues after a four-vehicle collision on the A1 this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a collision on the A1 (M) northbound near Carrville Interchange, Durham around 2.30 pm on Friday afternoon May 28).

One man was taken to University Hospital of North Durham.

Lane 2 had to close and average speed on approach to the incident was less than 10 mph, Highways England said in a tweet.

It later tweeted that all lanes had reopened, with delays on approach of about 50 minutes.

Durham Police said: “Emergency services were called at 2.40pm today to reports of a collision on the A1(M)northbound just after the Carrville Interchange.

“Nobody is believed to have been injured in the incident.”

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 2.23 pm to a reports of a road traffic collision involving four vehicles.

"We sent one ambulance and one of our hazardous area response teams.

"We’ve taken one male patient to University Hospital of North Durham.”
