Highways England confirmed on social media that the road was closed northbound between junctions two and three, with a diversion in place due to the “serious collision”.

It was reopened in both directions shortly after 5pm.

Motorists are advised to follow the diversion symbol and exit the A194M using Follingsby Interchange and take the first exit onto the A195 northbound.

They can then travel north on the A195 to A184, turn onto the A184 eastbound and travel east to A194 Whitemare Pool Interchange to re-join the A194M.

Fire crews from Newcastle Central, Washington and Hebburn stations were also sent to the incident.
