Shields Ferry suspended 'until further notice' as repairs continue to boat's landing

The Shields Ferry will remain out of service until further notice after its initial week-long suspension was extended.

Today, Thursday, February 11, Nexus, the public body which owns operates the cross-Tyne service, said it would not operate until further notice.

It has said its passengers numbers remain low due to the lockdown and apologised to customers for any inconvenience caused as the cancellation of the ferry began.

The work had already started on the landing repairs when the difficult conditions then prompted its closure, with heavy seas ongoing as well as snow and rain warnings.

A half-hourly replacement bus services is being provided to passengers while the ferry service is suspended.

The service departs on the hour and 30 minutes past the hour, Monday to Saturday from 6.30am until 6.30pm and Sundays from 10.30am until 6pm.

The buses operate between South Shields ferry landing and North Shields landing via the Tyne Tunnel.

From South Shields the buses depart from the bus stop on Ferry Street, outside the BT building.

From North Shields the buses depart from the bus stop on North Quay at the end of the ferry landing.
