Trio of films celebrate strong North East women


The screening is of films about strong women in the North East.
Jarrow poet and playwright Tom Kelly will introduce the afternoon film show, dubbed Ellen, Rosemary and the Dollys, at the Wednesday Heritage Club.

Hide AdThe club will meet at the Library Theatre in South Shields Central Library, in Prince Georg Square, at 2pm on Wednesday.
The first documentary film, Jarrow Voices, will look at Ellen Wilkinson’s contribution to the Jarrow Crusade. She served as Jarrow’s MP from 1935, until her sudden death in 1947.
The second, Breaking Ground, features interviews with Professor Dame Rosemary Cramp, a leading archaeologist, the leader of ground-breaking excavations at the monasteries in Monkwearmouth and Jarrow, and the third is One Hundred Thousand Readings, which tells the story behind The Dolly Mixtures variety act, who raised money to fight cancer.
