Two men rescued from River Tyne at Hebburn
One man was pulled from the River Tyne and the other was able to rescue himself from the water after sparking an emergency incident earlier today.
Northumbria Police, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) and Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and Tynemouth RNLI were called to a stretch of the river near to Hebburn Riverside just before 1pm today, Tuesday, April 7.
One man has been taken to hospital for treatment, but his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.
A spokesperson from Northumbria Police said: “Today at 1.02 pm we received a report of a male in the water near Ellison Street, Hebburn.
“Our Marine Unit attended the incident and helped rescue the male, who was then checked over by paramedics before being taken to hospital.”
A fire service spokesperson said: “At 12.59pm crews from Hebburn, South Shields and Byker – including our Swiftwater Rescue Boat – were called to the Riverside at Hebburn following reports of two people in the river.
“One had made their way out, but the other was stuck.
“We used throwlines to try and rescue the person in the river, however Northumbria Police’s Marine Unit arrived and were able to reach him and place him on their boat.”

SSVLB said police officers had recovered one person and the second had reached safety for himself as its team members and fellow volunteer life brigade members arrived on the scene.
