Volunteer Life Brigade check on couple near cliffs to find out they're 'just watching the sunset'
“After giving safety advice they left the area.”
A life saving volunteer team checking on the welfare of two people near a South Shields cliff were told the pair were simply watching the sunset.
On the evening of Monday, July 20 South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade checked rocks at the southern end of Sandhaven Beach during a training exercise, only to be told the couple were perfectly safe.

A statement from the volunteer force reads: “As the team were completing a rope rescue exercise, we noticed 2 persons in a precarious position on the cliffs at Graham Sands.
“We informed our Ops room that we were heading there to offer safety advice. When we arrived they returned to safety and informed us they were just watching the sunset.
“After giving safety advice they left the area.”
The call was the brigade’s 119th of the year after a hugely busy summer, which included the team’s busiest ever month in May.
