Warning to families on dangers of candles after woman suffers burns in Jarrow fire

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is warning about the dangers of candles after a house fire in Jarrow.

Crews from South Shields and Wallsend attended the incident in Glasgow Road at around 1am on Tuesday, January 21.

The blaze was caused by a candle, which the woman living in the house mistakenly thought had been extinguished.

She was alerted to the fire by her smoke alarms and was helped from the property by neighbours before firefighters arrived.

She received first aid for burns to her arm and hand and oxygen for smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital by a family member.

In a statement on Facebook, TWFRS said: “Protect yourself, your family and your home by double checking that your candles are fully extinguished before you go to bed or leave the house, and remember to test your smoke alarms regularly.”

The bedroom of the house was severely damaged by the fire, heat and smoke.
