We need a traffic survey following the opening of a Tesco Express in Marsden
A councillor is calling for a traffic survey in the Harton ward.
Councillor Neil Maxwell, of the Harton Ward, is calling on South Tyneside Council’s highways team to undertake a traffic survey following the opening of a Tesco Express at the former Marsden Inn pub.
The former public house, on Marsden Lane, was converted into a convenience store last year and the site is proving so popular that residents have expressed concerns over traffic safety.
Cllr Maxwell is asking the local authority to examine whether a road safety crossing is needed to ensure safe crossing for pedestrians using the store.

He said: “I have been approached by several residents who use the store on a regular basis and are required to navigate what is a very busy road.
“Residents love the new store, but at the moment their only safe crossing is a pedestrian refuge and they have approached me about whether a formal pedestrian crossing can be created near to the store.”
The councillor, who has visited the site with colleague Cllr Michael Clare and Cllr Susan Traynor, has stated that a highways survey will be able to determine whether there is a need for a pedestrian crossing.
He added: “I know that the safety of pedestrians is of high importance to the Council, a survey will give an honest appraisal as to whether we need a formal crossing at this location.
“Residents of Marsden find the store of great benefit to them and as it establishes itself further, there is bound to be increased footfall at this location.

“Whether that means we need a crossing will be determined by an independent survey.”
