Weather is never great
So the extra May Day Bank Holiday brought about in 1978 by the Labour Prime Minister '˜Sunny' Jim Callaghan to reward the beleaguered workers of Britain for all their hard work (as governments behind the Iron Curtain had done) didn't turn out too bad.
As the weathermen had predicted, though, it’s been estimated 80% of them have so far been washouts owing to displeasing wintry weather with temperatures sometimes down to freezing.
Official records dating back to the Victorian times also tell us that the first week in May can be unseasonably cold and wet.

Hide AdSo I would agree with former weatherman Michael Fish, who has suggested a much safer bet would be to move the bank holiday to the end of September or the start of October when we have some of our best and more stable weather.
