It is looking like a good day for a trip out on the last bank holiday before August.

Forecasters say the sun is set to shine for most of Monday, May 31 – but it is due to cloud over in the afternoon.

Monday will begin mild with sun and cloud before the skies clear from 9am until mid afternoon.

Cloud is due to roll in from 3pm until the sun comes out again later in the afternoon.

The top temperature for the day is expected to be 14C (57F) with a cool breeze in the air making it feel slightly cooler.

The Met Office’s summary for the North East on Bank Holiday Monday is: “Another fine and dry day, with plenty of strong sunshine. Early low cloud retreating back to some North Sea coastal areas.

"Widely warm, but cooler along the east coast.”

Some inland areas could hit 23C, it says. South Shields is set to stay warm for the rest of the week with Friday due to be the hottest day, possibly reaching 17C.
