Storm Ciara leads to cancellation of run as severe gales are expected to hit North East

The team behind a coastal run have said they have cancelled an event tomorrow as Storm Ciara heads our way.

The organisers of the Great Run Local 2k and 5k runs held from Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn, today confirmed the events due to be held from 9.30am on Sunday, February 9, will not go ahead.

It said: “Due to the predicted high wind speeds and heavy rain forecast for tomorrow, our Great Run Local at Souter Lighthouse is cancelled in the interests of everyone's health and safety.

The UK-wide warning, from midnight today until the end of Sunday, predicts gusts up to 70mph in coastal areas, with rain is also expected, making driving conditions poor.
