Storm Ciara leads to cancellation of run as severe gales are expected to hit North East
The organisers of the Great Run Local 2k and 5k runs held from Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn, today confirmed the events due to be held from 9.30am on Sunday, February 9, will not go ahead.
The team posted on its Facebook page that the decision was down to the weather warning, which has seen the Met Office issue a yellow alert.
It said: “Due to the predicted high wind speeds and heavy rain forecast for tomorrow, our Great Run Local at Souter Lighthouse is cancelled in the interests of everyone's health and safety.
The UK-wide warning, from midnight today until the end of Sunday, predicts gusts up to 70mph in coastal areas, with rain is also expected, making driving conditions poor.
