Wendy's all set for fundraising trek across the Rockies

Wendy Bowman, 41, from Mowbray Road, South Shields, is gearing up for a seven-day trek across the Canadian Rockies from June 25 to July 3, to raise funds for Marie Curie.

The occupational therapist who used to work for the cancer-support charity, will take on the challenge in memory of her uncle Donald Bowman, who died five years ago aged 63 after battling Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) – a rare condition that causes brain damage.

“It is going to be a challenge as I am more of a horse-rider than a walker, but the trek is in memory of my uncle Donald,” she said.

“He was a retired magistrate and civil engineer as well as being a keen photographer from Birtley, and was cared for in the Marie Curie Hospice in Newcastle at the end of his life.”

Wendy hopes to raise £4,050 which will be split between the cost of the trek and the charity, which provides care and support for people with terminal illness and their families.

So far she has raised £2,165 of her final target. The trek will see Miss Bowman walk for up to six hours a day across Calgary, Jasper, Banff, Parker Ridge, Lake Agnes and Maligne Lake.

Wendy added: “The trek is organised by Marie Curie. I have been to Canada before as my sister lives in Edmonton, but it will be the first time I have stayed in the Rockies.”

Ahead of the trek Miss Bowman will hold two charity events – a clothes swap and raffle event at Whitburn Cricket Club tomorrow from 1pm to 3.30pm, and a Easter fair at Whitburn Parish Church Hall on March 19 from 1pm to 4pm.
