United's manager recalled Mikel Merino, Ayoze Perez, Karl Darlow, Isaac Hayden and Chancel Mbemba to his starting XI.
Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle, Rob Elliot, Mohamed Diame and Javier Manquillo dropped down to the bench.
Newcastle started positively. They were fluid in attack and compact without the ball, but they were undone before the break by a goal from Robson-Kanu, who headed a Kieran Gibbs cross past Darlow.

Hide AdGibbs had got ahead of Yedlin to deliver the cross, and things got worse for him – and United – after the break.
Yedlin lost Field at the back post, and the winger volleyed a Matt Phillips cross past Darlow.
Newcastle, however, quickly, hit back. Clark headed a Matt Ritchie corner past Ben Foster, and, as they pressed for an equaliser, Benitez sent on Rolando Aarons and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
And their second goal came from Rondon, who diverted a low Ritchie free-kick, conceded by West Brom substitute James McClean, past Foster in front of the 2,600 travelling fans.
