Woman remains in 'a serious condition' after car flips over near South Shields Town Hall

Northumbria Police have confirmed that they were called to a road traffic collision outside the council building on Westoe Road, near the junction with Derby Terrace in the town at 6.21pm on Thursday, December 12.
Two cars were involved in the crash and the section of road was temporarily closed while emergency services attended the scene. This caused what the police described as “minor disruption” to the flow of traffic. Some bus services had to be diverted while the scene was ongoing.

Hide AdThe North East Ambulance Service has confirmed that they were called to the collision, and that the injured woman was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital. It has been confirmed that the occupants of the other vehicle left the incident with no physical injuries.


Gazette Readers have shared some dramatic photos from the scene of the crash, which show a car on its side.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 6.21pm yesterday (Thursday, December 12), we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on Westoe Road, South Shields.
“Emergency services attended and one of the drivers, a 44-year-old woman, was taken to hospital. She remains in a serious condition.
“The occupants of the second vehicle were uninjured.”
The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed to the Gazette that they were not in attendance at the incident.
