When snow is set to fall across the North East as Met Office issues weather warning

The warning, which covers the remainder of Monday, February 1, as well as Tuesday and Wednesday, comes as cold air is expected to push south and west across the whole of the UK.

Risks include travel delays on roads, stranding some vehicles and passengers, particularly on higher level routes; potential delays and cancellations to bus and train services and cancellations air travel; some higher rural communities becoming cut off: power cuts and disruption to mobile phone coverage, and chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces, with some pavements and cycle paths perhaps almost impassable.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders, said: “Rain will push into the south west on Monday evening. As the weather front ‘bumps’ into colder air further north, the rain will turn to snow, and with up to 4cm falling quite widely. a snow and ice warning has been issued.

What is forecast?

The Met Office is warning five to 10cm of snow could fall in northern England, with the potential for 20cm or more across the highest roads overnight and on Tuesday.

As well as snow, a period of freezing rain is also possible.

Further spells of snow, heavy at times, are expected to continue to affect parts of the north of England and Scotland on Wednesday, with accumulations of 10 to 20cm or more possible over higher ground.

How long is the cold weather likely to last?

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Jason Kelly, said: “While the south of the UK hangs onto the milder air for much of this week as we approach the weekend, the area of low pressure responsible for the snow across the north of the UK will clear, allowing colder air to push south and west across much of the country.”

“Further snow is expected for most parts of Scotland on Friday, while Saturday will be cold for all.”

It is likely to stay chilly for much of the UK into next week with brisk easterly winds making it feel even colder, though it will potentially be drier.

The long range 30 day forecast currently points to the likelihood of cold conditions continuing into the middle of the month.
