To check what you’re entitled to, you can use the grant checker on the Turn2Us charity website. To access the grants checker, visit grants-search.turn2us.org.uk

The Turn2Us website explains that “many charities offer non-repayable grants to help individuals or families on low incomes who are in need.

“To be eligible for support from a charitable trust, you have to meet its qualifying rules (eligibility criteria). This may be based on where you live, your age, gender, current or past jobs, health condition and nationality.

“Some funds may help based on the details of your partner, ex-partner or dependent children.”

The charity Family Fund aids families who are raising disabled or seriously ill children. They can apply for grants to help pay for several things, including washing machines, bedding, and furniture.

These grants are paid through specific suppliers and can be used for either the total cost of new items or for a discount off the cost, but the exact amount depends on the each case.

For those in England and Scotland, kitchen grants are supplied by the website AO, while in Wales grants are supplied by Argos. For those in Northern Ireland, the supplier is Vision Sales.

The charity Fashion & Textile Children’s Trust aids parents or primary carers who have worked within the fashion and textile industry for at least one year within the past nine years. This also includes working in a supermarket or shop that has a clothes range.

There are numerous other grants available for those who work in specific jobs or sectors, such as the insurance sector or BT.

Second hand furniture or replacements

There are also a variety of not-for-profit organisations where you can find help, including Reuse Network, where second hand household items are available through a network of reuse centres.

You can search on the website for local centres to see what is available, with items on offer including household furniture and whitegoods such as fridges and cookers. These have all been restored and tested to make sure they are working properly and safe to use.

Although you may have to buy the items in some cases, these products will be significantly cheaper than buying brand-new.

End Furniture Poverty also lists everywhere that you can find help for buying replacement furniture and essential household goods. For more information, visit: endfurniturepoverty.org/

If you’re struggling to pay for energy costs then the EDF Energy Trust was set up to help with this.

This trust also provides grants, which are known as Further Assistance Payments, which are there to help buy essential household items, including white goods.

To apply, you will need to supply details about your finances and explain your current circumstances.
