Jarrow became a trend setter when this shopping precinct opened 65 years ago.
In 1961, the South Tyneside town was the setting for the first ever opening of an Arndale shopping precinct but that would soon change with 22 more to follow across the country.
Its trademark was the Viking statue which was built by the Arndale Property Trust and which was unveiled in Jarrow in February 1962.
The precinct can be seen in views from 1996, 1971, 1972 and 1985, showing shops including Hardy’s, Fine Fare and Rogers pawn business.
The Jarrow centre later become known as The Viking shopping centre and we have reminders of those days too.
There’s Argos, Cooplands, Woolworths and the Card Factory.
