Stampley Moss Farm
Where is it? Gateshead (approximately 12 miles from South Shields)
Why you should visit: If you’re looking for a rustic countryside retreat, this family-owned wild camping site offers a back-to-basics approach. Located about eight miles from Newcastle, this tree-packed spot is a hidden gem: dogs are welcome and there’s even a small private wood where they can stretch their legs. You can watch the ducks on the pond or look out for red kites wheeling overhead then light the barbecue and relax for the evening – sounds like heaven!
Sharpley Camping
Where is it? Seaton, Seaham, SR7 0NN
Why you should visit: Another no-frills spot where kids can immerse themselves in nature and truly switch off. The views are gorgeous and less hardy campers seeking a little more comfort can get cosy in a heated glamping pod, complete with hot tub, campfire and heating. There’s loads of space, and well-behaved dogs and campfires are permitted.
Greencarts Campsite and Bunkhouse
Where is it? Humshaugh NE46 4BW
Why you should visit: Venture a little further afield to the beautiful Northumberland countryside and you’ll find this perfectly positioned gem on a working farm in the Tyne Valley. There are a couple of camping fields and a bunkhouse where people walking Hadrian’s Wall often opt to stay. Expect beautiful starry nights and roaring fires amid a stay that’s full of peace and healthy outdoors living.
Beamish Holiday Park
Where is it? Money Hills, Beamish DH9 0RY
Why you should visit: This scenic family-run gem has been recently refurbished - those who don't love life under canvas can choose from static caravans, wooden pods where you bring your own bedding, or the cute shepherd's hut and gypsy wagon which are both ideal for couples. The more intrepid can book a tent pitch but still make the most of the on-site bar and restaurant which also includes live music.
Sandhaven Caravan Park
Where is it? South Shields
Why you should visit: Situated just a short walk from the award-winning Sandhaven Beach, this park provides easy access to some of the UK’s most impressive golden sands.
