New day centre opens: Day care, respite and 24hr home care for people with complex needs around South Tyneside

A brand new state-of-the-art support centre for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities needs is opening on our doorstep.
Hebburn Day Care Services is a specially designed and equipped centre which will be able to offer both day care and 24/7 respite care for individuals with profound multiple learning disabilities, autism and complex health needs at the new centre, and an outreach service to support people in their home.
The team is specially trained to offer personalised, compassionate, and professional care for every individual. The service is available to adults aged 18+, Hebburn Day Care is new to South Tyneside, and has been carefully fitted out and redesigned in a former GP surgery building at Hebburn House in Rother Close.
It will offer respite care to those who care for and support people with additional needs, and can be booked privately or utilised through funded placements. The home care – which can range from an hour to 24-hour or overnight care – can be offered to clients on a case-by-case basis.

Open day
The centre is to be officially opened at 10am by the Mayor of South Tyneside at the open day on July 15. Everyone is welcome to take a look round between 10am and 6pm, but if you miss the event, or can’t make it, simply call the centre and they will arrange for you to have a private tour of the facilities and will be happy to answer any questions.
What’s in the centre?
There is a wide range of facilities, activities and specialist equipment at the centre to support the learning, development, interest and independence of clients including:
- Sensory room
- Immersive room
- Art room
- Rebound therapy room (with specially trained staff who can help with physiotherapy on this specifically designed trampoline floor)
- Cinema room
- Activity room
- Therapy kitchen
- Salon for pamper treats
- IT suite
- Respite
- Hydrotherapy which can be used by day centre clients and respite clients
Manager Christine Turner, said the centre was the third one to be opened by the company, which first opened a centre in Nottingham around 18 years ago, and one in Doncaster three years ago.
As well as offering day care, they also have six bedrooms for respite care.
The on-site kitchens provide home-cooked meals throughout the day and a nurse is on hand to support and assist anyone with medical needs.

Respite care
Christine explained that Hebburn House will be a lifeline respite care service for many in South Tyneside, who juggle supporting someone with extra needs and work or other commitments.
“Whether someone just needs an hour or two to themselves, or needs to know that the person they care for is in safe hands every day whilst they are at work, we can offer that service,” said Christine. And, of course, the respite care is there for times when a longer break is needed.
Each client will have a dedicated member of staff who is allocated to them from the beginning, allowing for a solid, trusting relationship to build up, a familiar face for the people using the service and peace of mind for carers.
