South Shields’ joint manager Graham Fenton admits he is brimming with pride after watching his Northern Premier League side go toe-to-toe with League Two Cheltenham Town.

But the Mariners man does believe his side were hard done to as they crashed out of the FA Cup first round after suffering a 3-1 loss at the Jonny Rocks Stadium.

A first half strike from Alfie May was cancelled out by Darius Osei before May added a second half second before the game was sewn up by a Liam Sercombe cracker.

Fenton said: “Fantastic. Really proud of them, myself and Lee (Picton) and Bri (coach Brian Smith). They gave it everything, even more so when we went 3-1 down, unjustly so.

“They could have folded at that point but they didn't. The lads rolled their sleeves, they kept going.

“Goals change games. We had to make the change because of the injury.

“You need those moments to go for you in the big games.”
