Great Scott propels table topping Hebburn Town to success

The Hornets claimed a fourth consecutive league win to maintain their two-point lead at the top of the Northern League Division One table.

Scott’s brace came either side of an equaliser from Stephen Callen – but substitute Michael Richardson came off the bench to add a third goal for Hebburn with five minutes remaining.

Dylan Elliott got the visitors back in the game when he scored a penalty in the last minute, but the Hornets held on to secure yet another win.

Bolam revealed that a change in position has breathed new life into Scott’s recent performances as he took his goal tally to six goals in his last five games.

He told The Gazette: “This position from the left-hand side is working for him and he has adapted to it.

“He’s a natural goalscorer so he keeps getting in those goalscoring positions wherever he plays. You look at people at the top end, the likes of Thierry Henry and Aubamayang’s and they have worked that position on the left well.

“Yes, this is a different level, but he is someone that can provide a threat from there too. I think a lot of people think it’s square pegs in round holes, but he is providing us with something that we need.

“The kid has added a little bit more to his game, he is going past players, he’s settled in and that’s a massive plus for me and Mick (Mulhern, assistant manager).”

Hebburn take a break from their promotion push when they travel to Division Two club Washington in the Durham Challenge Cup.

The tie will offer Bolam an opportunity to hand game-time to a number of his squad – and that will provide a chance for one of his key players. “All of the players that didn’t start on Saturday will start on Wednesday,” explained the Hornets boss.

“That includes the six substitutes and our back-up goalkeeper too.

“Michael Richardson will start and hopefully we can get some good game-time into him because he is massive for us. To be fair to Michael, he gave us a lift from the bench on Saturday and he went in and beyond Graeme Armstrong.”
