Hebburn Town spirit leaves Moore delighted after Guiseley win

Hebburn Town’s stunning form continued with a narrow win against Guiseley.

Hebburn Town manager Daniel Moore described himself as ‘really delighted’ after his in-form side picked up a ninth consecutive win against Northern Premier League Premier Division rivals Guiseley.

Both sides saw their preparations for the game hampered by an issue with the floodlights at the Trustmark Group Stadium that meant kick-off was delayed for 50 minutes. However, the Hornets and their visitors wasted little time in producing a surprisingly eye-catching opening to the contest as they both created chances inside the opening half-hour.

It was Moore’s men that struck the decisive blow as former Morpeth Town defender Michael Turner made the most of a set-piece routine instigated by Robert Briggs and Liam Murray to head home the only goal of the game just before half time.

The narrow advantage remained in place until the closing minutes when some late pressure from the visitors threatened to end Hebburn’s stunning run of form. That threat was ended when on-loan Sunderland goalkeeper Dan Cameron produced a smart save to deny Jordan Thewlis before claiming the resulting corner kick to preserve his clean sheet and his side’s lead.

That all means Hebburn head into the festive period sitting just one point behind Premier Division leaders Hednesford Town and Moore has stressed his side fully deserve the credit that is coming their way.

He told The Gazette: “It was a difficult game and I think they’re a good team. The conditions weren’t great, the preparations weren’t great so to come away with a win is brilliant from the lads. I think we deserved to win the game and I think they would say that as well. They had one shot on target late on and they had a penalty shout - but other than that, they haven’t done much.

“We had chances to get a second goal, we couldn’t get it - but we defended very well. We stood up to it and every one of the lads grafted to get the win. These narrow wins during the winter are just as vital as the wins we have been getting when we have been comfortable so we are just really delighted with the boys right now.”

Hebburn will now turn their focus towards their Boxing Day visit to Stockton Town.
