Jarrow Roofing knocked out by Whickham

Richie McLoughlin rang the changes with the hope of inspiring his faltering side to a win. However, the problems that have plagued the Roofers in the last few months remained, and they were sent out of the competition at the second round stage by their Second Division visitors.

Whickham were looking dangerous on the counter attack, and were causing Roofing problems with the pace in which they were breaking forward.

The first break came after only four minutes. Andy Hunter produced a good stop to deny Ross Nicholson’s low shot. The loose ball was cleared, but only into the path of Tom Soutar, who fired over the bar from 12 yards.

The high press was a common theme througout the first half, and Roofing were eventually caught out by it on 35 minutes.

Hunter produced a flying save to stop Nicholson’s shot from the left from curling into the top corner, but the loose ball was recycled and eventually fed through to the unmarked Aiston on the edge of the area.

He drove a shot in, and the ball took a deflection to wrong-foot the stranded Roofing goalkeeper.

Hunter then had to be at his best to stop the visitors from doubling their lead just two minutes later.

A cross from the right was headed out, but Ross Peareth controlled the ball and lashed in a fierce volley from outside the box. However, Hunter reacted well to get down and beat the ball away.

It took until the 66th minute before Roofing had a real chance on goal, after Kris Hughes found Arjun Purewal with a great through ball.

The full-back fizzed a low cross a long the face of goal to Paul Chow, but he saw his shot from a tight angle blocked by Owen Lancaster.

Whickham saw out the win but in truth, they never had to get out of second gear to claim it.
