The 21-year-old scored a fine solo goal for The Magpies in a 2-0 victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage to equal Alan Shearer’s record of scoring in seven consecutive Premier League matches for the club.

Willock arrived on loan from Arsenal in January and went on to score eight goals in 14 appearances from midfield.

Supporters have been calling for the youngster to extend his stay on Tyneside but his impact has been so significant that United may not be able to afford him should Gunners boss Mikel Arteta make him available for a permanent transfer.

On Monday evening, Willock took to Instagram to say goodbye. He posted: “@nufc family Thank you for rocking with me. I will never forget the love you have showed me, the team, the fans, the city will always hold a special place in my heart #UTM (up the Maggies). Goodbye.”
