Steve Bruce wants to sign a midfielder on loan before Monday’s transfer deadline – and Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury is one option.

“We’ve had to be patient,” said United’s head coach, who could sell Matt Ritchie to Bournemouth. “I’ve got one or two calls to make in the next 24 hours. We’re still hopeful we can get one or two over the line.”

The Daily Telegraph report that England international Maitland-Niles, also said to be a target for Southampton and Wet Bromwich Albion, is wanted by Bruce, who is under intense pressure at Newcastle following an 11-game winless run.

Maitland-Niles is said to want game time ahead of the rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament this summer. The 23-year-old – who has only made five Premier League starts this season – reportedly said goodbye to his team-mates at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground yesterday.
