While fans mourn the Spaniard's departure and those in the halls of power pick up the pieces after their ill-fated power struggle, there will be some within the camp who see Benitez's exit as an opportunity to revive their Magpies career.
Here we take a look at the 11 players who could come in from the cold, having been edged out or sent out by the former Real Madrid and Liverpool boss.
5. Joselu
The striker looked all set to leave for Alaves this summer, with Benitez set to press the button on a cut-price move back to La Liga - but it may be the case a new manager will want a look at the former Stoke City man. Photo: Ian MacNicol
6. Jonjo Shelvey
A supremely talented midfielder signed from Swansea City. Divides opinion with his in and out performances and found it difficult to break into Benitez's team, even when fully fit, last season. Photo: Alex Broadway
7. Rolando Aarons
Has one year left on his current United deal. Due to injury and off field issues has seen his playing time on Tyneside limited. Spent the back end of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. A talent, who will be keen to impress. Photo: Stu Forster
8. Henri Saivet
The midfielder was signed from France the January Andros Townsend and Jonjo Shelvey arrived. Unlike the other two, has made little impression on Tyneside, bar his free-kick against West Ham. Photo: Catherine Ivill
