The Newcastle United defender – who suffered the injury earlier this month – has had his shoulder pinned ahead of next season.

Schar, fielded in midfield by Steve Bruce amid a late-season injury crisis at Newcastle, had been struggling for form before the injury, which saw him miss the final two games of the season.

The 28-year-old – who has one year left on his United contract – posted a photograph of himself on Twitter after undergoing surgery. Schar tweeted: “A tough season for me. Didn‘t want to end like this, but that‘s football. The operation went well, and I will be out for a bit. See you next season️.”

Bruce hopes that Schar – who was named the North East Football Writers’ Association’s player of the year for 2019 – will be back in time for the start of next season on September 12.
