The winger was forced off in this afternoon’s 3-2 win over West Ham United at St James’s Park with a swollen ankle. The result moved the club up to 15th in the Premier League table ahead of the rest of the weekend’s games.

Saint-Maximin – who had forced an own goal from Issa Diop – had only just returned from a spell out with a groin injury. The 23-year-old – who scored one goal and set up another in last weekend’s 2-1 win over Burnley after coming off the bench – suffered the ankle problem early in the game, but played on.

Head coach Steve Bruce said: "Saint-Maximin got a bad swollen ankle, which he did after 10 minutes. We hope he’s going to be OK. We’ll see later on in the week.”

On Newcastle’s position, Bruce said: “I’m not going to take anything for granted, and 35 (points), in my opinion, is not enough.”
