The Magpies’ Tyne-Wear rivals lost 3-2 on aggregate to Lincoln City in the play-off semi-finals on Saturday afternoon, a result which condemned the Black Cats to another year in the third-tier.

Newcastle, meanwhile, sealed Premier League safety with three games to go before yesterday’s 2-0 win at Fulham helped Bruce beat last term’s point tally and secure a 12th place finish.

However, a few months ago, the two clubs’ were on course to meet in the Championship with Sunderland flying high and United sleepwalking into relegation.

A chant, posted by a group of Sunderland fans, made its way around social media with the words “Sunderland’s going up and the Mags are going down".

Indeed, it was seen by Saint-Maximin, who has now mocked the video after two teams’ fortunes spiralled into different directions.

He tweeted: “I'm looking for a song that a lot of people sent me in March but I can't remember the title, it was something like "Sunluns going up and the mags are going down" Who can help me please?"
