Eddie Howe’s squad welcomed five new additions to his squad in January with quality added to positions all over the pitch. There were also seven players that left on-loan to various clubs across the EFL.
Overall, it was a successful transfer window for Newcastle who entered February in a stronger position than where they were when they left December.
During the course of the window, there were some major decisions made by Newcastle that will impact the club not only in the short-term, but also in the long-term.
After a hectic month on Tyneside, here, we analyse nine major decisions made by Newcastle United in the January transfer window:

5. Shrewd Targett move
A loan for an Aston Villa defender may not seem an exciting deal on paper, however, Targett is a quality player. He was voted Villa’s Player’s Player of the Year last season and wanted a move to ensure he continued to get regular first-team football. Simply, he’s an improvement on the current options and is a risk-free deal that suits all parties involved. Photo: Clive Brunskill

6. Anderson’s Bristol Rovers move
Like Longstaff, many believed that a loan move for Elliot Anderson would see him move to a team further up the pyramid than a League Two side. However, this move, orchestrated by loan manager Shola Ameobi, sees Anderson link-up with former Magpie Joey Barton and there is a belief that Anderson will be used well in Bristol. Recognised as one of the most promising youngsters at the club, hopefully he can be a success whilst at the Memorial Stadium. Photo: George Wood

7. Trippier class
He may have only played three games in the black and white, however, Trippier has already shown his class whilst on Tyneside. The right-back has been a revelation since signing and has already elevated the squad with his on-field and off-field work. Photo: Stu Forster

8. Aiming high
Diego Carlos, Sven Botman, Darwin Nunez, Duvan Zapata and Dusan Vlahovic were all names linked with Newcastle last month, but none ended up on Tyneside. These players all have great european pedigree and were probably a step-up from the calibre of players that Newcastle could attract this month. There’s nothing wrong with aiming high, however, Newcastle were burned on more than one occasion in January. Photo: JORGE GUERRERO
