Newcastle United handed potential Anthony Elanga return date after scan results
Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga’s injury is not as bad as first feared.
Newcastle United could have Anthony Elanga back available after the three-week international break.
The 24-year-old was left out of the Sweden squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League matches after missing the Magpies’ Premier League fixtures against Leeds United and Hull City last week due to injury.
Elanga had scored two goals in his opening three Premier League games before missing the 4-1 defeat at Leeds last Monday. Newcastle feared the worst initially after head coach Matthias Jaissle admitted it “doesn’t look that good”.

But Jaissle’s tone changed slightly in the build-up to Saturday’s 2-1 win over Hull. The German confirmed Elanga was being sent for an MRI scan and added “we hope it’s not that serious”.

Newcastle United could have Anthony Elanga back for Coventry City trip
And the results of Elanga’s scan appear to have brought good news. According to Sky Sports News, the former Manchester United winger is making “good progress”, with the 23-day break potentially giving him enough time to return for the visit to Coventry City on Monday, October 12.
Elanga is one of several players Newcastle hope to welcome back after the international break, after they were without Ewen Jaouen, Amar Dedic, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn, Nico Gonzalez, Joelinton, Jacob Ramsey and Will Osula at the weekend.
“It's a concern for me as a coach, definitely,” Jaissle said on the club’s injury list. “It's a concern, and we will start from tomorrow morning to reflect on that. Hopefully after the break we have some legs back.
“I don't want to go into detail, it would not be the right way here in the press conference. But again, I hope, and we all hope really much, that after the break, we see at least one or the other back.”
Jaissle’s side have made a strong start to the 2026-27 campaign, despite a summer of big upheaval that saw head coach Eddie Howe leave alongside Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.
The Magpies have lost just one of their opening five league matches, collecting eight points from a possible 15, as well as beating West Bromwich Albion and Millwall to advance into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, where they face Everton away
