Only last month did it seem Steve Bruce’s side were certain to drop into the relegation zone following a humiliating 3-0 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion.
However, since then, the Magpies have collected seven points from a possible nine with a draw against Tottenham Hotspur and wins over Burnley and West Ham United.
Fulham’s upturn in form also proved to be short-lived with United opening up a vital eight-point advantage on the relegation places.
The big question is, will Newcastle now go on to retain their top-flight status?
Here, the bookmakers have released their latest batch of relegation odds – offering their verdict on West Brom, Fulham, Brighton, Burnley, Southampton and Crystal Palace’s chances of beating the drop:
1. Crystal Palace - 150/1
The bookmakers feel Roy Hodgson’s Palace are all-but safe with 38 points from 31 matches - 11 more than 18th place Fulham. Remaining fixtures: Leicester (A), Manchester City (H), Sheffield United (A), Aston Villa (H), Arsenal (H), Liverpool (A). Photo: IAN WALTON
2. Southampton - 100/1
A poor run of form by the Saints had prompted some relegation fears but wins against Sheffield United and Burnley in recent weeks should see them clear. Remaining fixtures: Tottenham (A), Leicester (H), Liverpool (A), Fulham (H), Leeds (H), West Ham (A). Photo: Pool
3. Brighton and Hove Albion - 33/1
Brighton are just six points above the relegation zone but are priced at fairly high odds to seal Premier League safety. Remaining fixtures: Chelsea (A), Sheffield United (A), Leeds (H), Wolves (A), West Ham (H), Manchester City (H), Arsenal (A). Photo: Mike Hewitt
4. Newcastle United - 12/1
A drastic change from what were odds of 4/5 after the Brighton defeat following a draw against Tottenham and back-to-back wins against Burnley and West Ham. Remaining fixtures: Liverpool (A), Arsenal (H), Leicester (A), Manchester City (H), Sheffield United (H), Fulham (A). Photo: DAVE ROGERS
