Deep into ‘Project Restart’ and the dark-times of football without fans, the Magpies travelled to the south coast with little to play for, aiming to put on a display against Eddie Howe’s struggling Cherries side.
And they certainly did that, blowing away their opponents to secure a 4-1 win away from home in dazzling orange shirts.
The only blemish on what was a near-perfect display that day came when former Magpie Dan Gosling netted a 90th minute consolation for the hosts.
It was one of the best performances Newcastle put in during Steve Bruce’s time at the club and one that they will be hoping to recreate this weekend when Howe takes his team to the south coast.
But what has happened to the starting XI and substitutes that wore Newcastle colours that day? Here, we take a look at their contrasting fortunes.

13. SUB: Miguel Almiron
Almiron enjoyed a stunning run of form earlier this campaign and has become a huge part of Howe’s team. His link up with Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier down the right side is a major threat for Newcastle in attack. Photo: GLYN KIRK

14. SUB: Andy Carroll
Carroll’s second stint at the club ended in 2021 when he was released by the Magpies. After spells at Reading and West Brom, Carroll rejoined the Royals earlier this season and has netted four goals in 17 Championship appearances to date this campaign. Photo: Naomi Baker

15. SUB: Valentino Lazaro
The Austrian moved back to Inter Milan after his brief loan spell on Tyneside, but was soon shipped off on-loan to Borussia Monchengladbach in summer 2020. He has since had loan spells at Benfica and Tornio where he currently plays. Photo: Alessandro Sabattini

16. SUB: Isaac Hayden
Hayden’s time at Newcastle was unfortunately littered with injury problems. After being left out of Howe’s 25-man squad last January, he moved on-loan to Norwich City at the beginning of the season but has once again had injury problems to contend with whilst at Carrow Road. Photo: Nathan Stirk
