'Everything was worth it' - Bruno Guimaraes summer plans confirmed as Newcastle United star misses out

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has reacted to his Brazil World Cup call-up.

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes is ready to live ‘the great dream’ with the Brazil national team at the 2026 World Cup this summer.

Guimaraes missed out on the previous Brazil squad due to injury but has now made Carlo Ancelotti’s final 26 man squad for this summer’s tournament.

It will mark Guimaraes’ second World Cup, having reached the quarter-finals with Brazil back in 2022 in Qatar.

Bruno Guimaraes reacts to World Cup call-up

The midfielder has been a key member of Brazil’s side in recent seasons, only missing a handful of matches for his country since the last World Cup, mainly due to injury or suspension.

On Guimaraes, Ancelotti said last year: “Bruno is a very important player for the team, complete, he can play in different positions on the field.

“I like him a lot because he works hard, a very complete player, I don't say that he is essential and cannot be dispensed with, but he is very important for the national team".

And reacting to his Brazil call-up, Guimaraes wrote on Instagram (translated from Portuguese): “Being present at another World Cup is the possibility of looking back and knowing that everything was worth it.

“Remembering every match I went to with my father and mother on the courts of Rio de Janeiro. The memory is vivid in this moment of emotion.

“The strength of my parents in letting me go live my dream in São Paulo, alone, with Audax. Later, living my dream at Athletico, Lyon, Newcastle and the National Team.

“I am happy and grateful to have lived each moment. I would do it all again. In the same way. Let's, once again, live the great dream. Since I was little, young man, "I" said I would get there. ❤️‍🔥🙏🏽🇧🇷 .”

Joelinton misses out

While Guimaraes is going to the World Cup, his Newcastle teammate and fellow Brazilian, Joelinton, is not.

Joelinton has been capped eight times by Brazil, scoring once. His last appearance for his country came off the bench in a 3-2 defeat against Japan last October.

And that remains his only cap under Ancelotti to date. Joelinton was named in Brazil’s 55-man provisional squad ahead of the tournament but was one of the 29 players cut when the squad was announced.

Brazil will head to the World Cup as one of the favourites despite recent underwhelming performances at the tournament. The five-time world champions last won the competition in 2002 but have only reached the semi-finals once since then - losing 7-1 as hosts to eventual winners Germany back in 2014.

Brazil will play their first World Cup match against 2022 semi-finalists Morocco on June 13. They then face Haiti on June 20 and Scotland on June 24 in the group stage.
