Bruno Guimaraes breaks silence on 'massive' Newcastle United injury blow with 73-word statement

Bruno Guimaraes injury: Eddie Howe has reacted to the news that the Newcastle United captain is facing an extended spell on the sidelines.

Bruno Guimaraes is set to be out for ‘a couple of months’ for Newcastle United following a hamstring injury, Eddie Howe confirmed.

The Brazilian suffered the injury in Newcastle’s 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Ahead of the trip to Aston Villa on Saturday, Magpies head coach Eddie Howe claimed the club were still awaiting to hear the full extent of Guimaraes’ hamstring injury.

And on Friday evening, news broke via ESPN Brazil that the Newcastle captain would be out for eight to 10 weeks as a result of the injury.

It rules Guimaraes out of action until April and will see him miss the Champions League matches against Qarabag, potential last-16 games, the FA Cup fifth round, potentially the quarter-final as well as the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe confirms Bruno Guimaraes injury timeframe

Speaking for the first time since the extent of Guimaraes’ injury was made clear, Howe said: “Yeah, I think he will be but I think the timeframe will be the timeframe really on this injury.

“I don't think there's any miracle cure for him. I think it will be a couple of months, as you say, we're probably looking at the end of the international break in March for his return.

“Massive blow for us, key stage of the season, he's devastated but it is what it is, we can't do anything about it, we just have to try and get him back safely and other players have to step up in his absence and I thought they did that today.

“Look at our midfield three [at Aston Villa] Woltemade, [Jacob] Ramsey and [Sandro] Tonali, I thought we were excellent.”

Following Howe’s comments, Guimaraes took to Instagram to post: “As previously reported, for the first time in 10 years of my career, I will have to spend some time away from the pitch.

“I’m very saddened, but certain that God knows all things. A muscle injury will keep me out for a few weeks, but it will help strengthen me and ensure I’m even more prepared for what lies ahead.

“Thank you all for the support, messages and concern. See you soon.”
