Bruno Guimaraes breaks silence on Newcastle United injury worry with 35-word statement

Bruno Guimaraes injury: The Newcastle United captain has reacted to his latest injury concern.

Newcastle United’s 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night had one notable negative as captain Bruno Guimaraes was forced off with a suspected injury.

The Brazilian had only just returned after four games out with an ankle injury but was forced off in the closing stages of the Premier League clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as The Magpies held on for an important three points.

After the match, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe suggested that Guimaraes had suffered a hamstring issue but couldn’t shed too much light on the situation.

“I'm not sure, he's a little bit worried,” Howe said. “I think that he's not sure [because] he said he's never had a problem with his hamstrings before, so is it cramp? Was it a muscle problem?

“Probably feels more of an injury to me, but let's wait and see.”

Following the match, Guimaraes took to Instagram to post a series of images of himself in action against Spurs along with the caption: “Very happy with the win! This looks much more like what we’re capable of doing. Great character from the team. Once again, I hope it’s nothing too serious and that I can be back soon.”

Following his ankle injury against PSV Eindhoven last month, Guimaraes wrote: “I hope the injury isn’t too serious and that I can be back on the pitch doing what I love most as soon as possible.”

The midfielder was then ruled out of Newcastle’s next four matches before returning against Brentford.

Newcastle United midfield injury concerns

The blow to Guimaraes comes after Lewis Miley suffered a setback in his recovery from a leg injury that has ruled him out for the last four matches.

The 19-year-old is set to miss the trip to Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, while Guimaraes will be assessed further.

Another midfielder expected to miss the trip is Joelinton, who has missed Newcastle’s last five matches due to a groin injury.

Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth complete Newcastle’s current injury list.

“We're missing [Miley] massively,” Howe admitted after the win at Spurs. “He's a huge player for us. Of course, there's Joelinton in our midfield, and they're two high-level players.

“Of course, we've spoken many times about the defensive injuries that we've had this season. We just hope we haven't lost Bruno.”

Newcastle United pile the misery on Spurs

After being booed off the pitch against Brentford on Saturday at St James’ Park, Newcastle turned the tables as it was Spurs that were booed off at home on Tuesday night.

There were also chants of ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ from Tottenham fans directed at head coach Thomas Frank.

But Howe, who has recently came under pressure himself, sympathises with the Spurs boss’ situation.

“It's not easy because momentum is very tough to get and it's easy to lose,” he said. “I think, in my experience, the times I've really struggled to get results, injuries are probably the main reason.

“I think that's exactly where Tottenham are currently and so I have a lot of sympathy for Thomas and his staff because if you look at the list of players they have, you've probably got a really strong Premier League team that are missing.

“So I think you need your players to really fight for you, as I felt my players did for me today. And you need to have that honesty in the group, where the chips are down, they're there for you.

“And I think that's the hallmark of the leadership of the group that I have. And that's all I can speak about.”
