Newcastle United star avoids Premier League ban - will be available v Crystal Palace

Newcastle United latest news: Bruno Guimaraes has avoided a Premier League suspension and will be available to face Crystal Palace.

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes avoided picking up a booking against Burnley on Tuesday night, meaning he will be free to feature against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Guimaraes had been walking a disciplinary tightrope for a number of matches, knowing that just one more booking would have seen him handed a one-match ban. Guimaraes has been shown four yellow cards in the league this season, with the latest of those coming during the defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Following that game, the Brazilian had to avoid picking up another booking in games against Chelsea, Manchester United and then again on Tuesday night against Burnley to avoid a ban. Premier League rules on yellow card suspensions read: ‘According to The FA's disciplinary rules, any player who earns five bookings from their side's first 19 Premier League matches of a season will have to serve a one-match ban in the same competition. Premier League yellow cards are not carried over to the EFL Cup or FA Cup.

‘Players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches up to and including their side's 32nd fixture will serve a two-match suspension in the competition.’

Newcastle United’s win over Burnley at Turf Moor was their 19th match of the campaign. That means that Guimaraes, and the rest of his teammates, now cannot be suspended for picking up five bookings and instead will only be handed a ban if they are booked ten times before their 32nd game of the campaign.

That match is currently scheduled to be their clash with Crystal Palace on the weekend of April 11, however, that could change if matches are moved around due to FA Cup commitments.

Joelinton was the only Magpies player to be shown a yellow card on Tuesday night following some pushing and shoving between himself and Kyle Walker before a corner-kick. The Brazilian was a tad lucky to not be shown a second yellow by Robert Jones, though, when he tripped Armando Broja as he looked to break for the hosts.

Newcastle United star banned for Carabao Cup clash

Whilst Guimaraes has avoided a Premier League suspension, one of his teammates will miss the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City next month. Fabian Schar, who has become a crucial member of Eddie Howe’s starting side in recent weeks due to the club’s growing defensive injury crisis, will not be available for selection against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Schar has been booked in both of his Carabao Cup outings to date this season, against Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, triggering an automatic one-match ban. Schar was also suspended at the same stage of last year’s Carabao Cup journey as he and, coincidentally, Guimaraes, missed their trip to the Emirates Stadium due to yellow card suspensions.

Fortunately for the Magpies, yellow card suspensions in the Carabao Cup do not carry over to the Premier League, hence why Schar has been able to play in matches since picking up that second booking against the Cottagers earlier this month.
