Callum Wilson England recall backed by Steve Bruce – but Newcastle United boss blasts 'ridiculous' international schedule

England play three games in the space of just six days following this weekend’s round of Premier League fixtures, with Gareth Southgate’s men taking on the Republic of Ireland, then Belgium and Iceland, starting next Thursday.
And even though Bruce is no fan of the international fixture pile up, he does want to see his six-goal striker Wilson rewarded for his early season form – even if he’d love to give the £20 million man a rest.

“We have seen a large increase in injuries. Soft tissue are up 40%. The international schedule borders on ridiculous.
"Look, I have a hard enough job picking my own squad – but he certainly must be in with a shout with the amount of goals he has scored this season.”
On Wilson’s early season form, Bruce continued: “He has been in and around the PL for years, works hard for the team, and a good lad. Good pace, holds it up and scores goals.

“It is never easy to be the centre forward at Newcastle, he has settled in well.”
Wilson’s chances of making the squad have been boosted, albeit unfortunately, due to an injury suffered by Southampton’s Danny Ings at the weekend.
A knee problem will see the frontman – one of English football’s top scorers in the last 12 months – miss the weekend clash against Bruce’s Magpies, and likely a further four to six weeks.

“As a football fan I am pleased he is not out for another 12 months. I wish him a speedy recovery.
“He deserves a bit of luck. I am pleased it is not serious.”
