Bruno Guimaraes tipped for surprise Newcastle United transfer exit amid ‘shop window’ claims

Newcastle United could lose their captain Bruno Guimaraes if he impresses during this summer’s World Cup - according to Chris Waddle.

Guimaraes made his return to action following an ankle injury during their defeat to Brentford on Saturday afternoon. The Brazilian had missed their last four matches in all competitions, but returned to Eddie Howe’s starting XI against the Bees. Guimaraes, though, was unable to help his side to victory.

That defeat left the Magpies in the bottom half of the table and with a mountain to climb between now and the end of the season if they want to secure a return to the Champions League or, at the very least, any form of European football.

Whatever happens come May at club level, Guimaraes will be preparing for a World Cup with Brazil out in the USA, Mexico and Canada. Brazil, under Carlo Ancelotti, will begin that tournament as one of the favourites and Guimaraes will likely be a major part of his team.

Bruno Guimaraes tipped for Newcastle United transfer

Speaking to Spreadex Sports, Waddle revealed his belief that if Guimaraes impresses this summer, then he could leave Tyneside before next season gets underway: “I think he’s very important. He’s captain. He’s at the World Cup this summer, he’s in the shop window like most players going to the World Cup and if he has a good tournament, then clubs from around the world will be looking and putting bids in.

“He’s had a good run at Newcastle, he’s been very consistent. He’s been the heartbeat of the team in the middle of the park, a lot of the football goes through him, but there’s always that thing in the back of your mind where you're thinking ‘is he waiting for that move?’.

“He’s 28 now, it’s his last chance at a big move after this World Cup. He’s an important player for Newcastle United but whether they can keep him after the World Cup or if his head might get turned after the World Cup. He’s been a good servant for Newcastle and been a very consistent player.”
