Crystal Palace ‘close’ to transfer of Wolves star for £10m less than Newcastle United bid
Newcastle United latest news: Jorgen Strand Larsen could finally be on the move out of Wolves this month - for £10m less than Newcastle United bid for him in summer.
Wolves are expected to accept a bid of around £50m from Crystal Palace for striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.
The Athletic report that Palace are ‘close to a verbal agreement’ with Wolves for the striker - although a bid has yet to be lodged by the Selhurst Park club. Leeds United have also been credited with an interest in Strand Larsen this month, but have reportedly valued the striker at £40m, £10m less than the Eagles.
After a very impressive debut campaign in England, one that saw Strand Larsen net 14 times in the Premier League, Wolves made his loan move from Celta Vigo into a permanent stay last summer, paying the Spanish side £23m for his signature. Less than three months later, Strand Larsen was being heavily-linked with a move to St James’ Park with Newcastle United submitting bids of up to £60m for him.
Wolves resisted interest from Tyneside during the summer transfer window and opted to keep their talisman at the club. However, the 25-year-old has scored just one Premier League goal this season, with that sole strike coming way back in October against Burnley.
Newcastle United ultimately signed Yoane Wissa from Brentford as they were frustrated in their attempts to lure Strand Larsen away from Molineux. Nick Woltemade also moved to Tyneside from Stuttgart in the final week of the summer window.
Jorgen Strand Larsen transfer latest
A reported £50m fee in all, split between £45m upfront and £5m in add-ons, will see Wolves net a tidy profit on the striker, but £10m less than they could have received in summer had they sold Strand Larsen to Newcastle United. Taking to X, David Ornstein revealed the finer details of Strand Larsen’s proposed move to Selhurst Park: ‘Crystal Palace close to agreement for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. Talks between #CPFC & Jorge Mendes on behalf of #WWFC advanced; £45m + £5m fee being discussed. Leeds United bids reached £40m but #LUFC not currently going higher @TheAthleticFC’.
It seems, though, that Strand Larsen's move to Palace is dependent on Jean-Philippe Mateta leaving the club before the January transfer deadline. Mateta has been linked with a host of clubs this month with Nottingham Forest among those to have shown interest in the French international.
AC Milan and Juventus have also been credited with an interest in Mateta this month. Palace reportedly value the striker at £40m.
Newcastle United’s January transfer plans
With just four days left of the winter window to go, it seems that Eddie Howe will not have any new faces to pick from between now and the end of the season. Despite a defensive injury crisis forcing them to draw up alterations to their plans and assess the market for reinforcements, it’s unlikely that any significant signing will arrive on Tyneside before the window closes at 7pm on Monday.

Loan deals are also unlikely to be sanctioned, with Howe admitting that the club have found it difficult to navigate that particular market: “It's very difficult to use the loan market effectively for us,” United’s head coach admitted ahead of their draw with PSG.
“There's not too many clubs around the world desperate to help us, due to the fact we're competitors. That's not to say we wouldn't look if it became available.”
