The Magpies confirmed on Tuesday morning that the pair are out of action until April after limping off in the 1-1 draw with Wolves on Saturday evening.
They join top scorer Callum Wilson on the sidelines, leaving Steve Bruce without his biggest attacking threats ahead of crucial fixtures against West Brom, Brighton and Aston Villa.
Here is how some fans reacted on social media:
@MagpieChannel_: Cursed club. Written in the starts to go down now.

@GeorgeAAOliver: The perfect excuse for Steve Bruce if we get relegated!
@Nikrai2: That’s it. We’re officially relegated.
@C_Slomski: We’re down. Horrible feeling in the stomach.
@walker_ajw: Championship here we come.
@JoeMiller_95: Championship away days are class anyways
@Edit_Kev: Essssh, I was fairly confident about survival, but these two alongside Wilson out until April is a scary prospect. #nufc
@CaptainAmeriMag: Not panicking yet like. Fraser and Murphy both played well when they came on against Wolves.
We still have more than enough quality to beat West Brom and Brighton. Get Miggy, Wilson and Maxi back for Burnley. #NUFC
@irishbobuk: Roughly 3 games missed. Hopefully be back against Spurs and Fulham wont have over taken us.
@ToonTalking: 3 games (at least) without ASM and Miggy... could’ve been worse I guess. #NUFC
@DanMcmahonF1: As great as ASM can be, we just can't rely on him. It's just been constant. Needs a solid pre-season behind him and to come back stronger.
