Eddie Howe reveals new Newcastle United injury concern

Ryan Fraser missed tonight’s penalty shootout win over Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup, and Howe revealed after the third-round tie at St James’s Park that the winger had a calf problem.

“Ryan’s got a calf problem,” said United’s head coach. “Not sure how serious that is. I think everyone else, hopefully, has come through OK.”

Nick Pope made three saves in the shootout.

Howe said: "It's exciting for everyone at the end, although not good for our health, but happy to get through. We know we can play much better than that but there are reasons, many of those playing haven't had much game time. Credit to Palace, they defended deep – and made it difficult. We wanted to win to keep that momentum – and we want to go as far as we can in the cup."
