Alan Shearer goes ballistic about transfer decision Newcastle United were forced to make

Elliot Anderson’s career has skyrocketed since leaving Newcastle United in 2024.

Alan Shearer turned the air blue when asked about Newcastle United academy graduate Elliot Anderson.

Newcastle reluctantly sold Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35million two years ago to ensure they complied with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Under the PSR model, which will be replaced by Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) ahead of the 2026-27 season, clubs are essentially incentivised to sell their academy graduates as it represents “pure profit”.

Starring not only for Forest but England too, Anderson’s value has skyrocketed, with suggestions he is valued at £100m. Manchester City has been strongly linked with a move ahead of the World Cup.

Alan Shearer turns the air blue amid Elliot Anderson reminder

When Shearer was reminded that Anderson is a former Magpie, he told the Rest is Football Podcast: “Ah, don’t talk to me about that crap, the s--t that is PSR, SCR, whatever it is called. Course it is [so wrong], it’s outrageous actually. It’s just wrong.

“You’ve nurtured players from a young and yet that’s the best way of trying to compete, is by selling those players. You see what is happening with both him and [Yankuba] Minteh at Brighton.

“I get that it has worked out for Elliot in terms of he probably wouldn’t have played much at Newcastle but his price tag now has rocketed because of what he has done, his ability and everything else.

“He’s going to have so many options because so many of the big boys are going to be after him. He’ll probably star for England in the summer as well at the World Cup and he’ll be equally as good for England as he has been for Forest.

“When he got the opportunities at Newcastle, he always did well but he had to get past Bruno [Guimaraes], [Sandro] Tonali and Joelinton. When those three were playing really well, it was tough for him to get in so he’s gone out and played regular football then shown his ability.

“He’s grown and got bigger and bigger and he’s more than proved his worth on the big stage. Did I see him being as good as he has been? Maybe not, but without doubt there was talent there.”
