Newcastle are through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup – but supporters weren’t impressed after watching their team scrape past League Two side Newport on penalties.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce made seven changes to his side following Sunday’s draw at Tottenham but still named a strong starting XI.

After falling behind to Tristan Abrahams’ opener at Rodney Parade, Jonjo Shelvey struck a late equaliser to take the tie to penalties, which the visitors won 5-4.

Here’s how some fans reacted on social media:

@Linty_7: I couldn’t celebrate this. Just felt embarrassed tbh and that’s nothing against Newport.

@danburge_: Made hard work of that

@ShevasNUFC: Embarrassing, spineless, pitiful, pathetic, clueless, inept, farcical, dreadful. But still somehow we're quarter finalists. I swear this club does it to us on purpose.

@IanGilmour04: I’m so sick of watching football devoid of almost any tactics, creativity and positive play going forward. Against a fourth tier side no less. Today’s win doesn’t even feel good or deserved at all

@CalGeere: Awful performance first half, better second half but shows how much we need a creative midfielder & extra striker… A win is a win though, on to the next round

@SteffanLloydO: Awful game. Undeserved win but at least we're through. Can’t carry on playing like this for much longer.

@MfonPetrus: That was very very poor.. We are playing unattractive football with all the tallest we have in our squad.. SB needs to sort that out or we will suffer massive defeats to PL clubs.

@Rickardo_nufc: We have been knocked out by poorer sides, onto the next round. Yes we are useless but we made it. Into the Quarter finals!
