But just as all looked lost Joelinton popped up with a late leveller. How did Newcastle United writer Liam Kennedy rate the Magpies’ display? Here’s his player ratings from the first 45.

Martin Dubravka – 6

Has had little to deal with apart from picking the ball out the net. Could do nothing about the equaliser.

Every time he plays just seems to get better and better defensively. Unlucky for the goal.

Emil Krafth – 7

What a header for his first goal in black and white on his 31st attempt. Some solid defensive work, too.

Federico Fernandez – 5

Looked a yard off the pace. Second to every ball.

Paul Dummett – 6

Solid enough and has kept things tight down the United left, the City left.

Matt Ritchie – 6

A very vocal evening for the former Scotland international and has defended well by his standards.

Jonjo Shelvey – 6

So unlucky with a free-kick from around 25 yards, bit the bar.

Joe Willock – 7

Some energetic bursts forward with United playing very much on the break.

Miguel Almiron – 6

Slightly improved on recent weeks but should have done better with one first-half break.

Allan Saint-Maximin – 6

Hasn’t been able to get into the game much but it was his break that won the penalty.

Joelinton – 6

Little to no impact up top but it’s hardly been his fault. Well, until a top class penalty on the brink of half-time.
