Every Newcastle United summer signing ranked by their player rating - including 7 goal star

We've ranked Newcastle's summer signings based on their WhoScored player rating from the season so far.

Newcastle United experienced one of the most volatile transfer windows possible in the summer, with Alexander Isak joining Liverpool after a drawn-out saga.

To replace the Swedish striker, the Magpies spent big on Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, while they also addressed other areas of the pitch with the acquisitions of Malick Thiaw, Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Aaron Ramsdale. But how have those summer arrivals performed for Eddie Howe so far? To answer that question, we’ve turned to WhoScored’s stats-backed player ratings to rank them.

1. Malick Thiaw - 6.99

Newcastle were heavily linked with Marc Guehi throughout the summer before turning their attention to Malick Thiaw. That turned out to be an excellent decision, with Thiaw’s 6.99 WhoScored rating the highest among the club’s summer signings and second only to Bruno Guimaraes (7.17) overall. The centre-back has three goals to his name, while he ranks first among Newcastle players for clearances (110), shots blocked (14) and aerial duels won (62). Thiaw’s form has been such that he’s earned a recall to the German national team.

2. Nick Woltemade - 6.84

Thiaw’s compatriot, Nick Woltemade, had to hold down the striker position almost singlehandedly in the absence of fellow summer signing Yoane Wissa. But Woltemade has been solid so far, netting seven goals and two assists in 18 Premier League appearances, with further strikes in the Champions League and EFL cup. Woltemade has failed to score in seven of his last eight league outings and will hope to turn that form around with Wissa coming back to fitness, but he’s still proven himself a useful target man.

3. Aaron Ramsdale - 6.31

Signed on loan from Southampton in the summer, Aaron Ramsdale needed an injury to Nick Pope before he was able to see the pitch in the Premier League. The England international has played seven Premier League games so far, averaging 1.61 saves per 90 minutes, but failing to keep a single clean sheet.

4. Jacob Ramsey - 6.29

Jacob Ramsey has made just four starts in the Premier League so far, only clocking up 508 minutes. He’s yet to score or assist in that time, but has averaged 1.58 chances created per 90 minutes. Ramsey was recovering from an ankle injury earlier in the season and is only now starting to gain some momentum.

5. Yoane Wissa - 6.26

Yoane Wissa arrived injured, and has only started seeing the pitch over the last month. The Congolese striker netted his first Premier League goal for Newcastle against Burnley in late December, just a couple of weeks after scoring against Fulham in the EFL Cup. Newcastle fans have had to be patient, but the early signs are that Wissa will deliver the goods. His player rating should rise in due course.

6. Anthony Elanga - 6.23

Newcastle spent a fortune on Anthony Elanga in the summer in an effort to equip Howe with a threat equal to Anthony Gordon on the other flank. Thus far, the Sweden international has utterly failed to live up to the billing, failing to score and registering just one assist in the Premier League. Elanga is 13th among Newcastle players for chances created (8), doing so at a rate of just 1.05 per 90 minutes.
