It started as a bit of an up and down campaign, but has accelerated predominantly downwards since mid-December with Steve Bruce’s Magpies on a run of two wins in 20 games in all competitions at present.
United currently sit just two points above third bottom Fulham, with a significantly worse goal difference, although they do have a game in hand on the Cottagers.
Here our writer Liam Kennedy has pored over the ratings from the opening 29 fixtures and averaged out the best and worst performers. To get a rating each player must have started at least five Premier League games, cup appearances or bench showings are not included – a rule which cuts out recently restored Martin Dubravka, Geordie duo Matty Longstaff and Andy Carroll (all four) and out of favour and out of form striker Dwight Gayle (two).

17. 3. Isaac Hayden - 6.18 (22 starts)
In a midfield department where United have struggled, Hayden has consistently produced. Even when asked to drop into a central defensive two or three he has not looked out of place. A real credit to the squad - shame he will miss the final nine of the campaign. Photo: JOHN WALTON

18. 2. Karl Darlow - 6.45 (25 starts)
Would have been knocking on the England door had he not been dropped, but it was not to be for Darlow. An excellent start to the season saw him tail off slightly as we head into the business end of the campaign. Still, he can reflect on what was a very positive season. Hard to argue it wasn't the right time to bring back Martin Dubravka, mind. Photo: Pool

19. 1. Callum Wilson - 6.70 (21 starts)
Ten goals in 21 starts in the Premier League for the Magpies, not a bad return for the frontman in his first season in black and white. It has not, however, been enough to keep the wolf from the door in terms of relegation. United will hope their £20m man can see them safe in the final nine games. Photo: Pool
