Ex-Juventus and AC Milan boss Max Allegri to Newcastle United? Serie A pundit gives his verdict

Former Juventus and AC Milan boss Max Allegri is likely to have the Newcastle United job as a ‘back-up’ should he fail to land a more high-profile role – that’s the view of Italian football writer David Amoyal.

Allegri has been installed as some of the bookmakers’ favourites to land the United job, currently occupied by Geordie Steve Bruce, following the confirmation of the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabian-financed takeover.

And the Italian football expert did not rule out Allegri to St James's Park, he suspects the 52-year-old will have offers from some more attractive clubs than Newcastle.

And ESPN columnist Amoyal, who is also a contributor on gianlucadimarzio.com, said in his Calcioland Podcast: “If you are a Newcastle fan hoping you are getting Allegri, I think it is fair to say he has not hidden the fact he wants to manage in the Premier League.

“As part of his sabbatical he’s been learning English. It seems he is leaning pretty strongly to going abroad. And the Premier League is the obvious option.

“And I know Newcastle are getting these new owners with deep, deep pockets and I think (Jorge) Mendes has come connections there.”

Amoyal does not think a return to Italian football is on the cards for Allegri, who won five Serie A titles on the bounce with Juve.

“When I look in Italy I do not see a team that makes sense (for him),” he said.

“Will he return to Juventus? I think that is fairly likely but will be down the road. Milan with their new policy of keeping salaries low, I just don't think Allegri is the guy. Some have tipped Napoli but Gennaro Gattuso has the job. With the sale of Roma being up in the air, I just don't see it.

“Is Newcastle a big enough project for Allegri? Maybe with the new ownership. I think Allegri had his eyes set on some really big jobs.

“Maybe Newcastle will be a back up. I could see him at Manchester United or PSG, Bayern Munich wouldn't make a lot of sense.

“I’m not ruling out Newcastle but my guess is that if Allegri could get a bigger name club he would.”
